THE EXCEPTIONAL HARLEY FETTERMAN

               To know Harley is to surrender the keys to your heart. Harley
             made some wonderful friends in our NFB mentoring program. He
             would light up the room with his guitar, or his jokes. When he began a
             sentence with, “actually, if you think about it…” you knew it was
             about to get pretty smart, and therefore, pretty weird.
               Somewhere along the way, without my permission, Harley started
             teaching me, and became my mentor. He taught me profound lessons,
             lessons that changed me forever. He taught me about how to live.
             Harley had every reason to be angry, yet he radiated peace and joy.
             He did not dwell on useless words, like unfair.

               Blindness is considered by so many people who don’t understand
             as a tragedy. Harley did not only tolerate or accept his blindness, he
             celebrated and mastered his blindness! He was a national Braille
             Champion. Cancer is horrific, devastating. Harley shaved his head,
