I’ve seen this too often. Employees want more development and training. However, the
misconception is that their organization or manager will take care of providing a
development plan and educational learning opportunities.
If you wait for your manager or organization to provide or even recommend your
development and training plan, you may be left behind.
You need to seek out your own opportunities! The great news is, in today’s digital age,
your options are endless.
The other misconception is that learning should be in the form of formal classroom or
virtual classroom training. This is not the case!
You want to seek diverse ways of growth and learning.
There is a model that I love to recommend called “The 70:20:10 Learning Model”. It
breaks down like this:
70 percent is on the job experience. This includes projects and tasks that you perform
as part of your everyday job responsibilities.
20 percent is learning from others. Mentoring, networking, and collaboration are
enablers here.
10 percent is formal training. This includes classroom training, webinars, seminars,
and conferences.
So, get going and take control of your own development plan based on the 70-20-10
model of learning!
Seek your manager’s support for what you create, but don’t wait for anyone to provide
it for you.
After all, you have control of your own destiny!
