controversial than the side method and to this point research
states that the mortality rate is 15% higher for fish fizzed using
the side method. While researchers cannot give an exact reason,
it is currently believed this is so because of the blood vessels and
other organs in such close proximity. I have seen success and
failures using both methods. In the photo to the right is the area
where the needle would be inserted. Please review the video link
included below to see an individual demonstrate fizzing in the
would be area.
STEPS for Crusher Area Fizzing
1. Hold the bass by it’s lower jaw.
2. Place the needle between the crushers approximately 1/4 inch above the throat hole and go straight down
until you just penetrate the skin. You will hear the air moving.
3. Lower the fish in the water and watch the bubbles release naturally.
4. Once the bubble stop or greatly slow, you are done.
NOTE: When the air bladder is inflated, it will push the stomach down and out making it easier to place the
needle into the air bladder. It is almost like it replaces or pushes the stomach out of the way.
Please see this video for more information. Crusher Fizzing Technique
Regardless of which technique you might decide to use, it does give the fish a better chance of survival,
especially if the issue is addressed in the first 5-10 minutes of symptoms appearing. If an angler waits until
they arrive at weigh in at the end of the day, it is likely too late. The damage to the bladder and other organs
is already done!
Along with fizzing, using a quality treatment in your live-will go a long way in keeping the fish calm and
maintaining their slim-coat protection.
