couldn’t work, couldn’t even enjoy my own kids. Every
minute of every day was tedious and painful. You almost
start to feel like, What’s the point of living?
My doctor and physiotherapist here in Canada are
both friends of mine, and I have a tremendous amount of
confidence in them. They wanted to take a conservative
approach and were reticent to do any kind of operation
on my neck. “You’ll never have the same quality of life,”
they told me. Well, I toughed it out for three months and
felt like, Damn with that. I’m not living like this anymore.

a Wednesday, and Dr. Hartl said he could operate
           Friday morning.
For decades I’ve known I had a displaced vertebrae
from a car accident when I was 14. Dr. Hartl showed me
on the MRI how the vertebra at the injury site wore down
as I’ve aged. I had a bone spur pinching a nerve in my
neck, which was causing the intense pain in my wrist,
at the end point of the nerve.
When I woke up after the surgery, I swear the sky
was brighter. It’s hard to describe the relief. It was like Coming Soon!
I escaped from a dark tunnel of despair. I was euphoric— 2022 Annual Appeal
