Rutgers Hosts Big Ten Police Conference
Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) hosted the 2016 Big Ten Police Chiefs and Directors Con-
ference at Rutgers University from Sunday, December
4, 2016 to Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Representa-
tives from every university in the Big Ten conference--
and more-- attended, including University of Illinois,
Indiana University, University of Iowa, University of
Maryland, University of Michigan, Michigan State Uni-
versity, University of Minnesota, University of Nebras-
ka, Northwestern University, The Ohio State University,
Penn State University, Purdue University, Wisconsin
University, and University of Notre Dame.
The roster of speakers offered a blend of real world
experience, critical analysis, and collaboration de-
signed to meet the challenges of today's law enforce-
ment environment. The conference offered several
opportunities for peer-to-peer networking and included
a day trip to the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
Among the discussion topics were Effective Leader-
ship During Times of Mistrust, Stress Management,
Professional Integrity, Changing Perceptions, Police /
Community Relations and Campus Climate, Innovative Community Outreach Programs, Screening Guide-
lines and Alcohol at Sporting Events, Immigration Policies at Universities, New Technologies for Campus
Safety, Accountability and Transparency, and Overview of Response and Lessons Learned from Active
Shooter Incident at The Ohio State University.
“This was a great networking opportunity, and a platform on which to exchange ideas, discuss prob-
lems and solutions, and gain valuable insight unique to policing the campus environment,” said Rutgers
Police Chief, Kenneth Cop. “On behalf of the entire department, we were truly proud to host this event.”
RUPD Recruits Celebrate Graduation
Rutgers University Police Department is proud to announce the addition of 11 new police officers, three
in the Central Division and eight in the North Division.
The three Central Division officers all
graduated on Thursday, December 15,
2016, from the Monmouth County Police
Academy. They are Officer Abraham Cha-
varria, Officer Youngchul Cho, and Officer
Kevin Shutrop. On Thursday, December
22, 2016, eight police recruits, who will
work in the North Division, graduated
from the Essex County Police Academy.
They are Officer John Gonzalez, Officer
Paul Hull, Officer Airika Hurling, Officer
Frank Polizzi, Officer Jennifer Braun, Offi-
cer Orlando Hernandez, Officer Stephanie
Olivo, and Officer Adalberto Pacheco.
Many of the officers have previously
worked as Security Officers at Rutgers.
All come with impressive backgrounds
including one US Army Sergeant, an
Army Reservist and fire lieutenant, and
a respiratory therapist, sales associate,
and dispatchers.
