When we see another behaving in a manner that is not
considered normal why can we not treat this situation as
a whole new experience for us to learn by, not try to treat
the condition with the hope that we may cure it and
bring the “sufferer” into our normal world to behave
normally. This does not just refer to mental conditions
but to physical conditions also. We have created a world
around our capabilities to the exclusion of exceptional or
unique situations. It is only in recent times that we have
made pedestrian road crossings usable by the visually
impaired, that we have made public places and public
transport wheelchair friendly, that we have included
facilities in schools for special needs, that we have begun
to language these differences in a more kind and
understanding way. However we still treat these
uniquely-abled as disabled.
