winter while their new home was been built. Unknown to them

there had been mysterious sightings and sounds heard in and
around this house. When the Fox family moved in they soon
experienced the noises and were at a loss to explain them. After

a month the noises began to be heard at night in the bedroom of
Mr and Mrs Fox. It seemed to come from the cellar beneath the

bedroom. At first it was assumed the sound was the hammering
of a shoemaker in the house nearby who was working late but
as the knockings became more distinct, and from every part of

the house it was realised that this was not so. The noises varied
in character, occasionally sounding like distant footsteps in

different rooms. The noises became so distinct and continuous
