felt a cold hand on her face. Chairs were moved from their
places.
At the end of March 1848 the rappings and knocks
had become louder than ever. Mr. Fox tried the windows to see
if it was the sashes rattling, but the raps only echoed his
attempts at shaking the windows. The youngest child, Kate,
shouted “Do as I do” and clapped her hands. The effect was
instantaneous: the invisible rapper responded by imitating the
number of her movements. Another daughter, Margaretta,
called out “Now do as I do, count one, two, three!” Once more
the raps re-echoed the count. Kate silently made the motion of
snapping her fingers. Instantly the sounds re-echoed her
movements. “Look!” she cried, “Look, it can see as well as
hear!” Addressing the unseen communicator Mrs Fox said:”
Count ten.” The raps obeyed. “How old is my daughter
Margaretta, and Kate?” Both ages were correctly rapped out.
They checked out more information with the communicator.
All the information was accurate. They invited their
neighbours to test the communication. In every case the
accuracy was 100%.
The story that the communicator eventually told was
that it had been a peddler who had been murdered in the house
and buried in the basement. He gave his name as Charles
Rosna, that he had been murdered for his money, he was 31 at
