the machine to do the work. We don’t have the time anymore to do the
washing. We can even employ other people to do other work for us –
because we don’t have the time to do it ourselves. You might claim
that you haven’t the skill – all skills can be learnt if we give the time
to it. You can employ another to do a job for you, that you are skilled
enough to do, but your earning capacity is greater than theirs – if you
are to do your job, you will earn sufficient to pay the tradesman and
still have profit to indulge yourself in your accumulating habits. If you
have the time you might even think of others things you wish to add to
your list of “accumulatables”.
If we can change our thinking to achieve sufficiency rather
than insufficiency we can begin to put our life time into order. If you
knew where your next meal were coming from you would not
preoccupy yourself with those thoughts of accumulating enough food
around you to ensure you will at least have enough for your next meal
– and perhaps the one after it. The marketing strategy of most food
providers is telling us that the least we can buy is a packet of goods.
Now this packet might contain twice as much as we need but it is
better to be safe than sorry. We can keep the rest for another day. We
are being trained to accumulate but not what we want (remember we
couldn’t buy a half packet) but what the marketing organisations want
us to. How many items in your weekly shopping are excess
quantities? How much of the items in your food cupboard are stored
because you wanted to store them? How many items were forced upon
you through “good” marketing strategy? Try buying legal measures of
motor fuel. You cannot. You can only buy more or less. More will
ensure you will get home with some to spare whereas less will ensure
you won’t have enough to get home at all. What is the greatest fear of
a smoker? They fear they will not have a cigarette when they need one
and usually they will have to carry an excessive number of cigarettes
