Module 8: LNG Vehicle Systems and Safety Practices
Lesson 8.4: LNG Vehicle Safety Practices
General Safety Do not allow an LNG vehicle into a facility that has not been modified specifically for
Practices LNG and/or that does not have a working methane detection system
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as prescribed by manufacturer
NEVER perform maintenance on a leaking vehicle
o Sparks from cordless electric tools can act as an ignition source and start a fire
Welding/Hot Work Always use welding blanket to protect LNG fuel system components when welding
on or around LNG vehicles
Your company may require additional procedures, such as a fire watch
If You Detect an LNG is unodorized and cannot be detected by humans
LNG Leak NEVER bring a leaking LNG vehicle into the maintenance facility - Leave the vehicle
outdoors
Identify the source of the leak
Repair according to manufacturer’s procedures
Methane Gas While optional for CNG maintenance facilities,
Detection Systems methane gas detection systems are REQUIRED
by code for all LNG maintenance facilities
When present, the methane gas detection
system detects methane at potentially unsafe
levels inside a maintenance facility. The
methane gas detection system:
Activates at 25% LFL and may perform some
or all the following:
o Activates an exterior red light
o Activates internal audible/visual alarms
o Activates emergency exhaust fans
o Activates and opens make-up air (roll-up doors, etc.)
o Deactivates heating system
o Deactivates welding receptacles
o Notifies your organization’s security department
o Notifies fire department, if required
