1.9 Intelligence, Thinking, and Cognitive Processes

1.9 Intelligence, Thinking, and Cognitive Processes

Understanding intelligence and cognitive processes is essential for studying creative

and scientific thinking. Intelligence shapes how individuals perceive problems, process

information, and generate solutions. In computing and information sciences, intelligence
is not only a human characteristic but also a concept closely related to artificial intel-

ligence, machine learning, and intelligent systems. This lecture explores the concept

of intelligence, its relationship with thinking, and the cognitive processes that support
problem solving, creativity, and decision making. These concepts form a foundation for

understanding how humans and machines think, learn, and innovate.

               1.10 Concept of Intelligence

Intelligence can be defined as the ability to learn, understand, reason, solve problems,
and adapt to new situations. It involves multiple mental capabilities rather than a single

skill. Psychologists and researchers have proposed various definitions of intelligence, but

               most agree that intelligence includes:

                   ˆ earning from experience L

ˆ easoning and logical thinking R
                   ˆ roblem solving P

ˆ daptation to changing environments A

In the context of computer science, intelligence is also studied in artificial systems, leading
to the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

               1.11 Types of Intelligence

               1.11.1 Human Intelligence

Human intelligence is complex and multi-dimensional. It includes:

                   ˆ ogical intelligence L

                   ˆ inguistic intelligence L

                   ˆ patial intelligence S
                   ˆ motional intelligence E

                   ˆ reative intelligence C
