Tree Staking
Article Provided by BrightView Landscape
With the upcoming removals and replacements of several trees throughout the community, the following informational article will cover the im-
portance of tree staking.
Proper tree staking is an important aspect of ensuring the health and stability of newly planted trees. The International Society of Arboriculture
(ISA) provides guidelines for properly staking trees to help them establish themselves and grow into strong, healthy specimens.
When staking a tree, the ISA recommends using two or three stakes placed on opposite sides of the tree, rather than just one. This helps to dis-
perse the load of the tree and prevents the tree from leaning too heavily in one direction. The stakes should be driven into the ground at a slight
angle, pointing away from the tree, to help prevent them from being pulled out of the ground.
The ISA also recommends using a flexible material, such as nylon or rubber, to tie the tree to the stakes. This allows the tree to move slightly in
the wind, which helps to promote healthy root and trunk development. The ties should be placed low on the tree trunk and should be adjusted
regularly to stop the tree from becoming too tightly bound to the stakes.
It is important to note that staking should not be used as a permanent solution for supporting trees. Trees should be left staked for a period of 1
year to allow the root system to establish and hold the tree upright, after that period, the stakes and ties should be removed to avoid girdling the
trunk and to allow for natural movement of the tree to promote a stronger trunk.
Brightview follows the guidelines set forth by the ISA and takes special care when planting new trees to ensure that they are given the best con-
ditions to thrive in your community.
