FOCUS ON Edyie Harris
Is it time to revisit a daily walking plan? Despite the warmer weather ahead of us, many members tell me
that don’t mind the warm weather as much as the chill of our Fitness Center (it’s a comfortable 70 degrees).
If you need some motivation to start walking again, let me share a few tips from Harvard Medical Schools’s
“Heart Letter”.
Research states that a daily walk can make for healthy heart and blood vessels. Walking has been proven to
lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, and help to control your blood sugar. Even a short walk can help cut
your risk of heart disease by 30%. So, get back to walking, even if it’s a five-minute stroll to start. The good
news is, if your doctor gives you the go ahead, small changes can occur quickly with a commitment to a daily
walk. If you’ve been walking and lost your enthusiasm, add some short burst intervals to liven things up.
Simply walk fast for 30-60 seconds then resume your previous pace. Or walk 25 steps fast and 50 steps
slower while moving your arms. Add in some of your favorite music, a great audiobook or podcast and the
time will fly by. Don’t forget the following when revisiting an outdoor walking program:
• Wear a hat with a good brim and sunscreen.
• Invest in a good pair of waterproof walking shoes for your chosen terrain.
• Dress comfortably, clothing with Lycra or Spandex can prevent chaffing.
• If you’re headed out early or late to avoid the hottest part of the day, be sure to wear reflective gear.
• Water gives you an extra boost to walk longer and of course, stay hydrated.
• A crossbody bag or fanny pack for keys, your phone and ID is a smart idea. Some of these bags are
designed to hold your water bottle as well.
We would love to organize a walking club in May. If you’re
interested in having some support and getting some insight on
adding intervals to your walking routine, please contact us at
561-549-0793 or eharris@bocairecc.com. Walking daily not only
supports physical well being but also helps ones mental and
emotional health. Having a community to support your wellness is
an asset to your success. We’re here to help.
