Born in 1952 in Shengang Township, Taichung County, Master Wang,Hsien-Chih specializes in floral and
botanical painting on lacquerware, characterized by an elegant and resplendent style. His talent has been
widely recognized, earning him numerous awards, including the Second and Third Places at the National Crafts
Award and the Kaohsiung Award at the 21st Kaohsiung Art Exhibition. He has also been granted the lifelong
privilege of exemption from future jury reviews. In 2011, he was officially recognized by the Bureau of Cultural
Heritage, Ministry of Culture, as a Preserver of Lacquer Art, specializing in the Maki-e technique. As a preserver
of Taiwan’s lacquer art techniques, including maki-e and gilding, Master Wang,Hsien-Chih was deeply influenced
from a young age by his father, the nationally revered master Wang,Ching-Shuang. Through years of dedication
and practice, he has not only mastered this traditional art form but also passed it on to his son, Wang,Chun-Wei.
Together, father and son are prolific artists, dedicated to promoting and teaching lacquer art and inspiring wider
                         appreciation of its unique beauty.
The Beauty and Mastery of Lacquer Art – Special Exhibition of Wang,Hsien-Chih is a joint presentation by
father-and-son artists Wang,Hsien-Chih and Wang,Chun-Wei. This exhibition showcases both lacquer paintings
and three-dimensional lacquer artworks. Wang,Hsien-Chih’s works are often inspired by Taiwan’s native flora and
fauna, folk imagery, and auspicious totems. Through his work, he expresses a deep affection for the land and its
culture, presenting the richness of local heritage. Wang,Chun-Wei focuses on creating and promoting lacquer
paintings and functional lacquerware, blending traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics. Held at the
Tun District Art Center, this exhibition highlights the exquisite craftsmanship of two generations of lacquer artists,
celebrating both heritage and innovation, and stands as one of Taichung City’s most significant artistic events of
                         the year.
Master Wang,Hsien-Chih’s work, The Peacock Displays Its Plumes, exemplifies meticulous craftsmanship,
from the initial molding to the detailed decorative painting. The work captures the peacock’s graceful demeanor—
its movements measured in procession, orderly in flight, and precise in every gesture—showcasing the artist’s
patience, refined technique, and the work’s delicate, sophisticated textures. Wang,Chun-Wei’s work, Hello Taipei,
blends traditional lacquer techniques with contemporary aesthetics. Building on his 2019 collaboration with an
independent Israeli watchmaker for the Night Flight series, the work depicts a traveler returning home at night,
gazing at Taipei’s cityscape through the airplane window. It transforms a sense of longing for one’s hometown
into the visual language of lacquer art, offering a contemporary reinterpretation.
An art book featuring the works of father-and-son artists Wang,Hsien-Chih and Wang,Chun-Wei
accompanies this invitational exhibition. The publication invites readers to explore the intricate world of
lacquer painting and to appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship embodied in three-dimensional lacquer
works. Collectively, these works present the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, as well as seamless
connection between art and everyday life.
