Uses:
1) In bacteriological culture media.
2) As bulk laxative in cases of chronic constipation.
3) In food industry for jelly making.
4) Vegetarian gelatin substitute
5) Agarose is used for gel electrophoresis used for separation of proteins
3) Carrageen = Irish moss
It is obtained from various red algae such as Chondrus crispus and
Gigartina mamilosa “Family Gigertinaceae”, which are known as Irish moss. It
is similar to agar; they are galactans with sulfate esters.
Uses: 1) Emulsion stabilizer
2) Bulk laxative
3) In food preparation
Polysaccharide containing amino-sugar units
1) Chitin
Chitin rarely occurs alone in nature, but complexes or covalently bound to
proteins as structural polysaccharide in:
1) Shells of crustacean such as crab shrimp and lobster.
2) Exoskeleton of the body and appendages of insects.
