Let’s Look Back
After stints in executive leadership at several other companies, Maurice I. Long (but
Butch to everyone who knows him), decided that the best way to build and shape an
organization was from the ground up. With this in mind, he founded a small startup in 1980
that parlayed his business acumen, institutional knowledge, and industry contacts into a
company that today serves customers across the federal domain and around the globe.
MIL, that one-time dining room table startup, now employs 800 talented staff comprised
of engineers, CPAs, IT technicians, cybersecurity specialists, business analysts, and a myriad
of other service professionals who go about the business of meeting the needs of MIL’s
customers every day.
From the beginning, MIL has reflected the founder, President, and CEO’s perspective. People
Making the Difference is not only the corporate motto, it’s been Butch’s unwavering mission
statement since the beginning. Making the customer’s goals your own was adopted as a
mandate by MIL’s CEO 40 years ago, and not much has changed since then. Over the years,
MIL has grown and been molded by the many strategic decisions that a business needs to
make to stay viable. When MIL was a fledgling company, the primary focus was making the
company’s name known, building a reputation for good work, and staying solvent.
Once the company was firmly established, the focus shifted to defining the company’s
areas of general practice, and from the beginning, information technology (IT) and financial
services served as the company’s bread and butter. Using professional connections built
over the years at the Departments of Energy and State, Butch and MIL went about the
business of forging solid working partnerships with clients at these agencies that would
last for decades. Long-term relationships with federal customers is now a hallmark of MIL’s
corporate experience. The company’s commitment to its clients is legendary within some
customer organizations, reflecting Butch’s long-ago decision to forge an organization that
made a real difference in helping its customers manage their business interests.
