According to the American Historical Society’s publication on the FOYs, the
first child born of THOMAS FOY and his wife REBECCA was a son named
JOHN who was born in St John’s Parish, Baltimore, Maryland on January 16,
1726.
REBECCA’s maiden name was PUTTEE. She was the daughter of PETER
PUTTEE, of Baltimore County. PETER left a will, dated October 5, 1733, which
refers to her as “my daughter, REBECCA FOYE”.
We do not know much about THOMAS FOY’s early life. One record trail of
a THOMAS FOY picks up In 1747 at which time a THOMAS FOY of Baltimore
County sold 100 acres of land called Tracey’s Park to a GEORGE
HITCHCOCK. The AHS document then reports a record of a THOMAS FOY
purchasing land in Craven County, North Carolina. There is no documentation
in the AHS document which indicates these two events, separated by two years
and in two different states, involved the same THOMAS FOY. It was just
assumed they were the same.
The AHS document reports that in 1749 a THOMAS FOY purchased land in
Craven County from SAMUEL and CATHERINE FIELDS. This purchase is
recorded in the Craven County land records, Book of Deeds #2, page 352, dated
December 22, 1749 and reads as follows:
North Carolina- To all to whom these presents shall come, Greetings: I,
Samuel Field, of Onslow County and Province aforesaid, and Catherine, my
wife, know ye, that I the said Samuel Field for and in consideration of forty
five pounds sterling money of Great Britain, convey to Thomas Foy all that
tract or parcel of land situate in Craven County on the North side of Trent
River, containing three hundred acres............ to which we have set our hands
and seals this 22nd day of December, Anno Domini, 1749.
(Signed) SAMUEL FIELDS
CATHERINE FIELDS
It will be recalled that earlier we discussed a letter written by AMOS SIMMONS
FOY who wrote that his “great grandfather” settled on the Trent River in North
Carolina. Some researchers feel the above cited land record described the parcel
