                                      CHAPTER SUMMARY

                                                     Glomerular filtration

                   • The kidneys receive approximately 25% of the cardiac output, or 1.2–1.5 L of blood

per minute via the renal artery.

                   • Approximately 10% of this volume (i.e. 120–150mL) is removed every minute as

it passes through the glomeruli of the kidneys.

                                                    Active tubular secretion

                   • In addition to glomerular filtration, certain drugs can also be secreted into kidney

                     tubules (e.g., dicloxacillin).

                  • Factors affecting tubular reabsorption

                        -Urine pH

                        -Urine flow rate

                  Other routes of excretion

Biliary, fecal, salivary , pulmonary , mammary , skin excretion

                                 Frequently asked questions

                      1. What are the differences between Glomerular filtration and Active tubular

                         secretion?

                      2. What are the Other routes of excretion (discuss only three)?
