Why do we have different concentrations of KI in each beaker
although the volume of water and the amount of KI in each
beaker are identical?
The volume of water present in each beaker could be
determined as follows:
Beaker A Beaker B
Conc. 100 µg / mL 50 µg / mL
100 µg (or 0.1mg) of KI in 1 50 µg (or 0.05mg) of KI in 1 mL of
mL of water water
Amount of 1 g or 1000 mg KI 1 g or 1000 mg KI
KI 0.1mg → 1 ml 0.05mg → 1 ml
1000 mg → ?? ml 1000 mg → ?? ml
Volume of 1000 x1 /0.1 1000 x1 /0.05
water = 10 000mL or = 20 000mL or
10L. 20L.
Why do we get a different volume of water in each beaker?
‒ The presence of a small amount of charcoal (adsorbing agent) reduces the KI
concentration in the available identical volume of water in beaker B.
