Block Producers (BPs) are the backbone of the EOS
blockchain because they are the only instrument
through which any change can occur to the EOS
network. Their role is to validate transactions on the
network and update such transactions to the EOS
network. They do so by producing blocks and adding
these blocks to the EOS chain (blockchain). The BPs
are adding blocks to the EOS blockchain every 0.5
seconds.
EOS BPs are the gatekeepers of the EOS blockchain.
Their role is so important that even Block.one(creator
of the EOS.IO software) cannot override their
authority. Block.one periodically propose upgrades to
the EOS blockchain but these proposals must be
vetted by the BPs. If the BPs reject the proposals, it
is rejected. If they accept it, it gets implemented to
the EOS network.
The BPs are powerful but they don’t have absolute
power. They are actually servants of the EOS Token
holders and must act according to the will of the
EOS Token holders because it's the token holders
who have the power to put them or remove them
from their position. Apparently, the EOS Token
