For David, life after an amputation is
a reality. Though, with help from his Just Better Care Community Support Professionals, he reflects on his experience with remarkable positivity.
David was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at just 20 years old. “It forced me to ask myself, ‘What do I want out of my life?’” he says. “Travel was the answer.”
David launched himself upon the world, adventuring through South America, the South Pacific, Thailand, Hawaii and across Australia.
Many years later, approaching 60, David was back in Sydney with his arthritis rapidly advancing. Living in a state of constant pain, doctors suggested amputation. He agreed. That operation gave David immediate relief from a life of pain.
While in hospital, David was introduced to the Just Better Care Northern Beaches office and met the people who would become his Support Professionals.
As David’s independence increases, they drop by just a few times a week to help around the house and take him to appointments.
“We get on extremely well,” he says. “They really know me, and we’ve built up great friendships. We even go out for lunch with my family.”
David still loves travelling and has decided his next destination is Singapore. His Just Better Care team, along with his Support Advisor, are working with him to make that goal possible.
“If I can get there, that would be amazing,” he says. “Life is an adventure!”
