word recognition, and provide ample opportunity to apply skills to connected
text. Keep in mind that the end goal of reading is comprehension, and continue to
work on comprehension as you target Phonics.
Vocabulary
These children appear to know a limited number of words. Oral language
development should be a focus for small-group time. Provide rich, engaging oral
vocabulary activities that teach new words and explore relationships among
them. Also integrate instruction of Vocabulary in comprehension activities that
focus on drawing meaning from both read-aloud texts and texts read
independently.

Target Skills that Children in this profile are in the emergent stage in the development of number
students must and quantity concepts; they may need practice either with counting and writing
master: numbers, or they may need to better understand what it means to add and
subtract small quantities, or both.
Those children with a low score in Number and Operations may have gaps in
understanding one-to-one correspondence, counting beyond 10, or grouping
objects into bundles of 5 or 10. Those children with a low score in Algebra and
Algebraic Thinking, even if they have strong counting skills, will likely need
practice finding sums, especially sums of 5 or 10. They will also likely need
practice using addition and subtraction concepts to solve word problems. These
children will particularly benefit from instruction on the skills described below in
the section Algebraic Thinking. All children in this profile are also likely to benefit
from reinforcement of essential vocabulary.
