There have been times, however, when, even though I have tried to stay positive and focus on the “bright side of things,” I have felt sad or frustrated about having to manage and cope with food allergies. Being able to see the positives in any given situation is important. Sometimes, though, that positive energy and thought is not nearly enough. We can feel down and a little left out. I have been to dinner parties where all I could eat were raw vegetables because we had not brought more food. The hosts had told me that everything would be safe for me. At these dinners, I told myself to focus on the facts that I could eat something, I was with friends and family, and that I could eat something when we returned home. Despite all of that positive thinking, I did feel upset. I felt upset that I had not brought a full “safe” meal for myself. I felt upset that the hosts did not understand my allergies. When “seeing the bright side of things” is not enough, I find it important to have friends and family there to support me and someone to talk to.
Quick Tip - It’s normal to feel down or frustrated about food allergies. Don’t feel like you always must be overly positive in every situation and ignore your true emotions. Find out what is bothering you and try to deal with it for next time.
What would you say? (Q&A)
Bailey, Lindsay and Stephanie
What is the best part about having allergies?
Bailey - The best part about having allergies is getting to be part of a community where everyone is working to raise awareness about anaphylaxis. There’s a sense of belonging and leadership within the Food Allergy Canada community which I am honoured to be a part of. Also, auto-injectors are pretty cool. Seriously. Not very many people just carry around a needle that can save their life!
Lindsay - Since my allergies usually lead me to not eating desserts, I always say that my allergies are keeping me healthy and saving me some unnecessary calories.
Stephanie - You are unique, you always have a conversation starter, and you are an “exception.” Therefore, you are exceptional!
Have you ever felt glad to have allergies?
Bailey - There have been situations where I can honestly say that I was glad to have allergies. It’s part of
who I am and I’ve been able to meet some pretty awesome people because of it!
Lindsay - My allergies have inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. I hope to become an allergist. I am glad, therefore, that allergies are a part of my life. Otherwise I might not have arrived at that decision.
