P. 133
Stephanie - Once, one of my teachers brought small chocolates for our small group. Because she didn’t know what was in the chocolates, she bought me a giant allergen-free chocolate bar. I was really glad to have allergies then (and my classmates wished they did too). I was also grateful for such a thoughtful teacher!
If someone says “Wow, it must really suck to have allergies,” what do you say back?
Stephanie - It’s not easy to have allergies. However, by informing others in advance and being careful, I can live a fulfilling and enjoyable life just like anyone else! I have plenty of variety and foods to choose from.
Lindsay - I respond by saying that it might suck sometimes. But it really doesn’t limit me in anything that I do. I am still able to fully enjoy my life and live it how I want to even though I have allergies.
Bailey - The last time someone said “Wow it must really suck to have allergies” to me I was missing class to go to the allergist. So I responded with, “Wow it must really suck to have to go to math this afternoon.”
Would you be okay having allergies for the rest of your life?
Stephanie - Yes, I have had allergies for over two decades and have learned to live with them. So I would be able to have them for the rest of my life. I may not have a choice. But, if you can’t live without them, you may as well live well with them!
Lindsay - Having lived with my allergies my whole life, I would definitely be okay with having them for the rest of my years. I have accepted that it is highly unlikely that I will grow out of my allergies. So I am okay with having them forever.
Bailey - I would be okay with having food allergies for the rest of my life and, according to my allergist, I will likely have them for the rest of my life.
To wrap it up...
Dealing with allergies is certainly challenging. And is not something we would wish upon anyone. However, taking a step back to appreciate the benefits to growing up with allergies can help you embrace them as part of who you are and help you to make the most of it.
