AN UNDERGLAZE-BLUE AND COPPER-RED ‘EIGHT EMBLEMS’

Yongzheng six-character mark and of the period
Delicately potted, the rounded sides rising from a short foot, the
exterior painted in cobalt-blue with a meandering leafy stem bearing
eight quatrefoil flower blooms, each supporting a ribboned bajixiang
emblem outlined in copper-red, framed by an underglaze-blue double
line below the mouthrim and a single line to the footring, the interior left
undecorated, the countersunk base inscribed in underglaze blue with a
six-character reign mark, box.

Jingdezhen Ming dynasty Imperial kiln site, which has the same motif
as the present cup, illustrated in A Legacy of Chenghua, Hong Kong,
1993, no.C93; compare with another two cups included in the Special
Exhibition of Ch’eng-hua Porcelain, National Palace Museum, Taipei,
1976, cat. no.38, depicting the eight emblems surmounting a leafy
scroll, and cat. no.39, which portrays the Buddhist emblems raised on
canopies issuing from a leafy scroll.
