A PALE GREEN JADE ‘PHOENIX’ RHYTON CUP
17th/18th century
Deeply hollowed to form a slender cup with the head of a
phoenix rising from its elegant neck curving upwards from
the base of the cup, the sides carved with archaistic scrolls,
the feathers and wings of the bird curling upward to the rim
with a single chilong, the stone of pale greenish-grey tone.
11cm (4 3/8in) high.

Arts, is illustrated in Chinese Jades: Archaic and Modern,
Minneapolis, 1977, pl.211 (left).

See a similar pale green jade ‘phoenix’ rhyton cup, 18th
182 century, which was sold at Christie’s New York, 21 March
2014, lot 2510. A related white jade ‘phoenix’ rhyton cup,
early 18th century, was also sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong,
8 October 2014, lot 3671.

Smoothly carved of flattened hexagonal form, with a
recessed foot tapering to a bulbous body and flaring neck,
the stone of pale green tone with dark striations.
11.1cm (4 1/2in) high.
