It has been suggested that the function of boxes, such as the present
example, was as a container for a gift of sweetmeats; see J.Harrison-
Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p.324,
no.11.129, where a slightly smaller box with similar indented corners
and painted with a single full-frontal dragon is illustrated. See another
related example illustrated by R.L.Hobson, B.Rackham and W.King,
Chinese Ceramics in Private Collections, London, 1931, pl.25; see
another example illustrated by A.du Boulay, The Duberly Collection of
Chinese Art at Winchester College, Winchester, 2019, p.34, no.CH43.

Compare with a related blue and white box and cover of similar form,
but painted with dragons, Wanli mark and of the period, which was
sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 30 November 2017, lot 316.
