A RARE BLUE AND WHITE BASIN
Chenghua six-character mark, Tianqi/Chongzhen
The vessel stoutly potted with rounded sides rising
to an everted rim painted with gnarled prunus
branches, the interior painted with an archaistic
vase and square brushpots filled with a profusion
of blossoming peonies, lotus buds, and fruiting
pomegranate branches surrounded by hovering
butterflies, the exterior with butterflies and ducks
swimming in a lotus pond, Japanese box.

KINGDOMS’ CIRCULAR PLAQUE
196 (two views) Late 16th/early 17th century
Well painted in vivid shades of blue with an general
sitting beside a burning candle in front of a large
screen, with his left arm resting on a cloth-draped
table, on which lies an open book, a woman kneels
towards him on a tiled terrace floor, with balustrade
and rockwork in the background, all within an
octagonal border of eight cartouches of various diaper
designs, mounted in a frame.
The plaque 28.2cm (11 1/2in) diam.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi).
During the Ming dynasty, illustrations in woodblock
