Wen nan two-character mark, 17th century
The figure seated with his left arm resting on
rockwork and holding a scroll turning to his left, the
voluminous robes open at the front to reveal the
emaciated ribs and falling around him at the base,
incised two-character mark to the reverse, carved
hongmu wood stand.

AN UNUSUAL BRONZE ‘QIAO SISTERS’
GROUP
17th century
Gracefully cast with the sisters turning towards each
other, wearing elegant flowing robes and scarves
draped about their sleeves, 10.5cm (4.1/8in);
together with a bronze figure of Guanyin, 17th
century, modelled seated holding a scroll in the
right hand, the hair in an elaborate high chignon
emerging from a cowl, the robes falling in elaborate
pleats, 11cm (4.3/8in) high. (2).

The Qiao sisters became legendary in Chinese 213
history for their beauty and for marrying two famous
war heroes. They were the daughters of the official
Qiao Xuan (109-83) of the late Han dynasty, with
one marrying the warlord Sun Ce, and the other
marrying Sun’s close friend, General Zhou Yu.
