17th/18th century
Crisply carved as a recumbent horse with head turned back over its
right shoulder looking at a monkey perched precariously on its back
and clasping on the reins, the stone with some cloudy inclusions.

top of a horse (mashang 馬上), also meaning ‘quickly’, is a rebus for
‘quick ennoblement’ or rising quickly up the ladder of success in one’s

borne on a gnarled branch, the reverse carved with two circular studs,

A WHITE-GREY JADE ‘CHILONG’ BELT BUCKLE AND HOOK
18th century
Deftly carved in openwork in the form of an archaistic chilong, the
flattened head forming the hook while a smaller chilong with bifurcated
tail perches on its sinuous body grasping in its mouth a foliate spray,
the other section similarly modelled with a writhing chilong, each of
217 the two sections with a centred rounded knob on the underside, the
smoothly polished stone of white-grey tone.

A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ‘DOUBLE CRANE AND PEACH’
GROUP
17th/18th century
The confronted birds delicately carved recumbent beside a gnarled
branch bearing two ripe peaches, one bird with the head turned on its
back and feet neatly tucked beneath the body, the other resting one
foot on the larger peach, their plumage picked out with finely-incised
feathers, the stone of white tone with cloudy and russet inclusions.
