                                                                          The well-proportioned vessel fashioned in the
                                                                          shape of an archaic bronze ewer gong standing
                                                                          on a high spreading foot, the bulbous mid-section
                                                                          finely carved with archaistic designs of taotie masks
                                                                          amidst ruyi heads and ‘C’ scrolls, the lower and
                                                                          upper sections with bands enclosing geometric
                                                                          roundels, the handle shaped as a mythical bird,
                                                                          the wide pinched pouring lip and foot decorated
                                                                          with key-fret borders, the stone of pale green tone
                                                                          marked by russet inclusions. 16.3cm (6 1/2in) high.

                                                                          清乾隆 青白玉雕仿古饕餮紋觥

                                                                          The Qianlong emperor proposed to ‘restore ancient
                                                                          ways’, referring to the view of ancient culture as
                                                                          having intrinsic qualities of sincerity, simplicity
                                                                          and happy exuberance. For this purpose the
                                                                          emperor instructed the Court to collect drawings of
                                                                          antiquities, such as the Xi Qing Gu Jian (Catalogue
                                                                          of Xiqing Antiquities), which were in turn provided
                                                                          to the jade craftsmen for inspiration; see Chang
                                                                          Li-tuan, The Refined Taste of the Emperor: Special
                                                                          Exhibition of Archaic and Pictorial Jades of the
                                                                          Ch’ing Court, Taipei, 1997, pp.49-50. Compare
                                                                          with a related white jade gong, Qianlong, illustrated
                                                                          in The Complete Collection of Jades in the Palace
                                                                          Museum, vol.6, Shijiazhuang, 1991, no.37. A white
                                                                          jade gong vessel, Qianlong, was sold at Bonham’s
                                                                          Hong Kong, 29 May 2018, lot 27.

                                                                          A PALE GREEN AND BLACK JADE ‘DOUBLE
                                                                          LOTUS POD’ CARVING
                                                                          18th century
                                                                          Naturalistically carved in relief as two lotus pods
                                                                          with circular seeds, with a beetle clambering on
                                                                          top, borne on curling stems issuing a blossoming
                                                                          lotus bud, further flower and furled lotus leaves to
                                                                          the base and side of the pods, the opaque greyish-
                                                                          white stone with dark and beige inclusions, wood
                                                                          stand. 11.5cm (4 1/2in) wide. (2).
