           18th century
           Deftly carved as a shallow oval dish with a shallow
           recessed base and two chilong dragons clambering
           around the longer sides with faces and front paws
           peeping over the rim, the interior with a pearl issuing
           two fire scrolls, wood stand

           A FINE WHITE AND RUSSET JADE CARVING
           OF A LOTUS ROOT
           18th century
           The rhizome naturalistically detailed with constricted
           knotty sections wreathed by furled leaves, an   320
           attendant seed-pod and a lotus bud issuing from
           curling stems, the polished stone of white tone
           accented with russet veins cleverly used to enhance
           the lotus flower, carved wood stand.
           15.3cm (6 1/8in) long. (2).

           The lotus rhizome with blossom conveys auspicious
           wishes for happiness and fruitfulness in marriage.
           Compare with a related pale green carving of a lotus
           rhizome, Qing dynasty, illustrated in Jade, Ch’ing
           Dynasty Treasures, Taipei, 1997, p.102, no.38. See
