The shaped panel enclosing an elaborately-decorated surface with Finely incised and painted in qiangjin and tianqi technique reserved
five five-clawed dragons amidst wispy ruyi clouds, all pursuing on a rich red ground on the shaft head with a full-faced five-clawed
a flaming pearl in the centre, above crashing waves and rocks, dragon coiling around a flaming pearl amidst wispy clouds, the wide
the detail precisely picked out in the ‘gold-engraved and filled-in’ mid-section and end of the shaft decorated with panels of flowering
technique. 109.7cm (43 1/4in) wide. branches, the narrow shaft shallowly incised with bats amidst clouds,
all picked out in black, brown and green within incised gilt lines and

For a similar motif of dragons amidst clouds, in the tianqi technique, 十八世紀 填漆戧金雲龍紋如意
but on a table top, early Qing, see, Ming Qing gongting jiaju daguan,
vol.1, Beijing, 2006, p.192, pl.203. Ruyi sceptres were made in a variety of materials including wood,
bamboo, ivory, cloisonné enamel, jade and coral. Lacquer examples
such as the present one however are rare. See a qiangjin and tianqi
lacquer ruyi, Qianlong mark and of the period, which was sold at
Bonhams London, 12 May 2016, lot 278.
