The cover deeply carved with two gentlemen
conversing in a fenced riverside garden, a boy
attendant carrying a wrapped qin, amongst
paulownia trees and rockwork and before
mountainous shores, all on geometric-pattern
grounds.

AND WAVES’ BOX AND COVER
Qianlong
The lobed circular cover with two five-clawed
dragons with bulging eyes and horns emerging from
an intricate ground of crashing and foaming waves
349 in mutual pursuit of the flaming pearl at the centre,
the sides decorated with a dense hexagonal-diaper
ground.

A similar circular carved cinnabar lacquer ‘dragon’
box and cover, Qianlong mark and of the period,
was presented by the Qianlong emperor to King
George III following Lord Macartney’s Embassy of
1792-1794, and is illustrated by J.Ayers, Chinese
and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her
Majesty the Queen, vol.3, London, 2016, p.852,
350 no.1959.

Compare with a similar carved cinnabar lacquer
‘dragon’ box and cover, Qianlong mark and of the
period, which was sold at Bonhams Hong Kong,
3 December 2015, lot 32.
