A RED POTTERY MODEL OF A HORSE AND
RIDER
Tang Dynasty
The rider probably depicting a foreigner, with a
determined expression and hair tied up in a top knot
beneath a black cap, seated astride a red painted
horse standing four-square with well-modelled
facial features, 42cm (16 1/2in) high; together with
a small model of a horse, Tang dynasty, standing
four-square with alert expression, covered overall
in white wash, 24cm (9 1/2in) long; and another
pottery model of a horse at full gallop and rider, Tang
dynasty, 16.2cm (6 1/2in) long. (3).

and rider, Tang dynasty, with the characteristic
long sleeve covering either one or both hands, see
M.Girard-Geslan, Of Earth and Fire: The T.T.Tsui
Collection of Chinese Art in the National Gallery of
Australia, Canberra, 1999, pp.42-43, no.19, where
the author notes that a long sleeve covering the
hand is an indication of aristocratic status.

TWO PAINTED POTTERY ‘ZODIAC’ FIGURES
Tang Dynasty
Modelled with animal heads supported on human
bodies, each wearing loose robes with long sleeves,
their hands held together at their chests, with traces
of white and coloured pigments remaining, the
heads respectively depicting the goat and the dog.
The largest 32cm (12 1/2in) high. (2).

A related set of twelve pottery Zodiac figures, Tang
dynasty, unearthed at Xi’an, Shaanxi Province in
1955 and currently in the Museum of Chinese
History, Beijing, was included in the exhibition
China in Venice, Venice, 1986, nos.56-67; another
complete set, excavated in 1950 at Ba Qiao, 81
Shaanxi Province, and currently in the Shaanxi
Beiling Museum, was included in the exhibition
Gilded Dragons, London, 1999, no.63.
