                                                             Tang Dynasty
                                                             The animal cast standing four-square on short legs, with a softly-
                                                             rounded belly rising to a sinuous spine terminating in a short tail above
                                                             the rear legs with leaf-shaped ears above almond-shaped eyes, the
                                                             facial features finely incised around the eyes and mouth, the surface
                                                             with mottled dark patination and russet encrustations. 26cm (10 1/4in)
                                                             wide.

                                                             GRAPEVINE’ MIRROR
                                                             Tang Dynasty
                                                             Crisply cast with a central crouching mythical beast knop, encircled
                                                             by a band of four recumbent lions amongst fruiting grape vines,
                                                             surrounded by a band with birds and further grape vine, the reverse
                                                             plain and polished to a high sheen. 10.2cm (3 1/2in) diam.

                                                             the author suggests dating the mirror to the late 7th Century, based
                                                             upon a similar example found in the tomb of Dugu Shizhen, at Xian
                                                             and dated to 698; and for another ‘lion and grapevine’ bronze mirror,

                                                             Chinese Art, London, 1935, no.669.

                                                             A PAIR OF LARGE PAINTED POTTERY FIGURES OF
                                                             LOKAPALAS
                                                             Tang Dynasty
                                                             Each guardian figure modelled standing, with one arm raised to hold
                                                             a spear, the other hand resting on the hip, wearing a finely-detailed full
                                                             armour with breast plates and epaulettes at each shoulder, their faces
                                                             painted red and well modelled with individual expressions, wearing
                                                             an elaborate helmet capped by a triangular finial, traces of coloured
