Music or the theme of ladies playing musical instruments, occupies
an important part of Lin Fengmian’s oeuvre. See for example a related
painting of a lady playing a qin, illustrated in The Collected Works
of Lin Fengmian, vol.2, Beijing, 2000, p.17. Apart from the zither,
however, Lin Fengmian also painted ladies playing the flute and pipa in
particular; see Ibid.,.pp.10, 12, 13, 15, 19 and 20.
