A ‘RED-VEINED’ STONE VASE-
SHAPED INKSTONE

QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)
The inkstone is carved in the shape of a flattened baluster
vase finely incised with archaistic dragons and flanked by
a pair of elephant-form handles, enclosing the smoothly
polished ink well. The centre of the recessed underside is
carved and gilt with a four-character Qianlong reign mark
in seal script.
4Ω in. (11.5 cm.) long, hongmu box and cover

The ‘red-veined’ stone is native to Shandong, and has been
used as a material for carving inkstones since the Tang dynasty.
Compare with a ‘red-veined’ inkstone with similar texture
and colour incised with a Qianlong imperial poem praising its rubbings

quality in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in The
National Palace Museum’s Ancient Inkstones Illustrated in the
Imperial Catalogue His-ch’ing yen-p’u, Taipei, 1997, p. 382-383,
no. 83.
The box and cover accompanying this lot is made of a type of Dalbergia
wood which is subject to CITES export/import restrictions since 2 January

清 紅絲石太平有象硯
硯背鎸「乾隆年製」款。紅絲石產於山東，以其如絲的紋理、溫
潤如玉的質地，及紅黃相間的瑰麗色彩聞名於世，自唐宋以來即
為製硯名料。比較清宮舊藏一方收錄於西清硯譜的乾隆御題紅絲
石風字硯，其質地、色澤與此類似，見《西清硯譜古硯特展》，
台北，1997 年，圖版 83 號。連紅木硯盒。
本拍品所附硯盒由黃檀屬的木製造而成。從 2017 年 1 月 2 日起，所有由黃檀屬
的木製成的作品受 CITES 出入口管制。除非獲得 CITES 再出口許可，此拍賣品
