722 A LARGE BRONZE ‘BUDDHIST LION’
CENSER AND COVER
17TH-18TH CENTURY
The censer is formed as a stout Buddhist lion sitting on its
haunches, its front legs braced, and cast with fames and cloud-
like scrolls on the body. The separately cast head opens on
a hinge at the front of the neck, and is cast with thin fames
coiling out from the open mouth and thickly curling mane
and brows. The tail is also separately cast with two rows of
curling tufts of hair.
