AN INSCRIBED TIANHUANG ‘MYTHICAL

ANIMAL’ SEAL

SIGNED ZHOU LIANGGONG, EARLY QING DYNASTY

The seal is surmounted by a finial in the form of a single-horned
recumbent mythical beast, the sides of the seal incised with a long
inscription recounting the carver’s trip to West Lake in Hangzhou,
followed by a signature Yuanliang. The seal face is carved.

Yuanliang is the studio name of Zhou Lianggong (1612-1672), a scholar-
official active during the late Ming to early Qing period and was known
for his talent in calligraphy, painting, poetry and seal carving.

周亮工 （1612-1672），字元亮，號陶庵、減齋等，明末清初文學家、
篆刻家、仕宦，原籍河南祥符。明末進士，授山東濰縣知縣，後遷浙江
道監察御史。入清後，先後任江南鹽法道道員、福建按察使，累升戶部
右侍郎。博學多才，工詩文、金石、書畫、篆刻。

A PAIR OF INSCRIBED SOAPSTONE ‘QILIN’

SEALS

SIGNED WANG FU’AN, DATED CYCLICAL GENGWU YEAR,
CORRESPONDING TO 1930

Each columnar seal of square section is surmounted by a

recumbent mythical beast, and carved with a poetic inscription

signed Lin Ji on one side. One seal is further carved with a dated

inscription dedicating the seals to He Mengsun (1858-1934),

signed Wang Fu’an, while the other also bears the signature of

the carver. Both seal faces are carved with the hall names of He

Mengsun.
