PROVENANCE

Acquired from The Chinhuatang Collection, Taipei, 5 July 1999

The current disc is very unusual in that its form is reminiscent of the
upper flange of an Eastern Han bi disc. However, its lower edge is
level and not curved, so it did not appear to have been attached to a
disc before, and is a complete pendant inspired by the flange form.
Compare a jade disc dated to the Eastern Han period in the collection
of the Dingzhou City Museum, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji 4 –
Qin, Han, Nanbeichao, Hebei, 1993, p. 184, no. 256 (fig. 1), which has a
flange with a similar dragon design on one side.
