明儉 水竹幽居圖 王翚
Provenance:
Dr. J. T. Lou collection (陸潤之), Shanghai and Hong Kong, and thence by descent
Mingjian, who also used the name Jiugu, was a Buddhist monk from Jiangsu Province. Before
taking the vows of a monk, his family name was Wang. In paintings he followed orthodox masters.
His biography is recorded in the Molin Jinhua.
In the present composition Monk Mingjian notes in the inscription that his inspiration for this
painting is Wang Hui’s (1634-1717) Shuizhu Yuju Tu. Wang Hui’s original of this painting, a
handscroll dated 1672, is currently in the the Suzhou Bowuguan, and in the nineteenth century it
was in the collection of Gu Wenbin’s Guoyun Lou collection in Suzhou. It is likely that “Xiangfu”,
the recipient of Mingjian’s painting, is the calligrapher and connoisseur Qian Yue (1743-1815).
