Pan Lan, who also used the artist’s name Jiaoshi, was a student of Ren Xiong (1823-1858), the
father of the Shanghai school. Pan Lan’s paintings were said to have a profound effect on Zhang
Shuqi (1900-1957). This album of bold compositions and daring brushwork vividly demonstrates
the new directions the Shanghai school was taking in the late nineteenth century.
