Two fan paintings of Figures with Calligraphy, late Qing/
Republic Period
Two folding fans, the first ink and light color on paper, depicting a lady in
a window, bearing the signature of Pan Zhenyong (1852-1921) with one
artist’s seal, reversed by calligraphy in running script signed Yang Shining,
with two artist’s seals; the second fan, ink and color on paper, of a scholar
and beauty in a boat, signed Zong Xi with two seals of the artist, reversed
by calligraphy in running script on gold paper, signed Zhang Shichai, with
one seal of the artist.

Scholar in a Landscape, 1905
Folding fan, ink and color on paper with a long inscription by the artist,
dedicated to Ti’an, followed by a date of yisi (1905) and a signature
reading Ni Tian, Mogeng, reversed by calligraphy in running script, ink
on gold paper, also dedicated to Ti’an, dated Guangxu yisi and signed
Wang Xun (1846-1915).

Ti’an, the recipient of the landscape and calligraphy, is likely Wang Zuxi
(1858-1908), the noted late Qing dynasty collector and connoisseur
from Shaoxing.

Wang Ershui, who also used the names Wang Yuanzhui and Wang
Yuanmiao, was from Hangzhou. The distinctive appearance of his
paintings is due to the fact that he used a very fine brush and multiple
layers of xuan paper. The overall effect is lush and dense.
