Property Formerly in the Collection of Dr. J.T. Lou (陸潤之) Dr. J.T.Lou (陸潤之) (1907-1988)
was a renowned ophthalmologist in
Dr. J.T. Lou Shanghai during the Republic period,
and in the 1930’s he was appointed
professor at Shanghai’s Aurora
University (震旦大學). In 1934, he
pursued further medical research in
France before returning to Shanghai
as Director of Hospital Sainte-Marie
(廣慈醫院). At the end of World
War II, Dr. Lou immigrated to Hong
Kong where he built an extremely
successful medical practice treating
the likes of Zhang Daqian and Zhao
Shao’ang. Through his expert service
to his patients and his relationships
with famous artists, Dr. Lou built
an impressive collection of Chinese
painting and calligraphy. The lots
included here have remained within his
family’s collection to the present day.

Mounted, framed and glazed, ink on paper, inscribed by the artist with a
dedication to Runzhi, signed Qian Mu, with two seals of the artist.

Acquired directly from the artist by Dr. J. T. Lou (陸潤之), Hong Kong, and
thence by descent
Qian Mu (Ch’ien Mu) was one of the foremost Chinese scholars of the
20th century. Having taught at Yanjing University, Peking University, and
Zhejiang University, he settled in Hong Kong in 1949 to teach at the
Chinese University of Hong Kong. A prolific writer on the history of China,
Qian Mu’s most well-known work is General Outline of Chinese History
(Guoshi dagang), written in the 1940’s.
