A RARE RETICULATED FAHUA JAR,
GUAN
MING DYNASTY (1368-1644) PROVENANCE
The jar has a broad, tapering body decorated with scenes of scholars, Mrs. Howell H. Howard Collection.
some on horseback and some accompanied by attendants, alternating The Art Institute of Chicago, accessioned in 1962.
with mythical beast masks and beaded roundels suspending various
emblems and tassels. The scenes are set within a continuous openwork LITERATURE
landscape, which incorporates the façade of a building with a fgure E. Gorer and J. F. Blacker, Chinese Porcelain and Hard Stones, vol. 2,
emerging from a door, all below geese and forets on the shoulder and London, 1911, pl. 194.
honeycomb pattern on the neck, and above a band of petal lappets 明 琺華鏤雕人物圖罐
encircling the foot, all picked out in turquoise, yellow, yellowish-brown
and white on a dark blue ground, and the interior is covered with a thin
turquoise glaze.
