Carved in openwork and depicting
a suzume (sparrow) with its
wings stretched out within a
framework of leafy bamboo and
kiku (chrysanthemum) heads. The
sides show finely carved curls. The
reverse continuing the image with a
stylized bird made from the heavily
porous and spongiform material of
the antler. Himotoshi through the
backside.

Condition: Excellent condition with
natural ‘flaws’ to the material.

The manju netsuke finely stained Finely carved as a lively group of a mother Shishi with her three cubs, the entire
and carved on both sides with two composition set on a circular base. The mother is snarling, while the three
Buddhist lions, depicted in different young Shishi have their heads lifted to the sky. Fine details, the underside with
attitudes, within an oval reserve himotoshi. The manner of carving and stain is very much reminiscent of Ishikawa
and above a finely stippled ground. Rensai of Asakusa, Tokyo.
