                     Japan, Asakusa, Tokyo, second half
                     of 19th century

                     Carved in openwork and depicting
                     a suzume (sparrow) with its
                     wings stretched out within a
                     framework of leafy bamboo and
                     kiku (chrysanthemum) heads. The
                     sides show finely carved curls. The
                     reverse continuing the image with a
                     stylized bird made from the heavily
                     porous and spongiform material of
                     the antler. Himotoshi through the
                     backside.
                     DIAMETER 4.2 cm

                     Condition: Excellent condition with
                     natural ‘flaws’ to the material.

                     The manju netsuke finely stained     Finely carved as a lively group of a mother Shishi with her three cubs, the entire
