A ROIRO-NURI CABINET
Edo Period, circa 1640-1690
The rectangular box with pilastered corners
and twin doors to the front in the form of an
arch, opening to reveal six sliding drawers
to the interior, the hinged roof-form cover
with sloping sides, inset with a mirror to the
lid interior, decorated in gold lacquer and
mother-of-pearl inlay with panels of figures
and pavilions in mountainous retreats,
flowering and blossoming plants, applied
gilt metal fittings with floral and geometric
designs.

x 15in).

Worked in silver wire with sparrows in flight
amongst dense profusions of sprays of
chrysanthemums, daisies and foliage, on
midnight blue grounds, the footrims with
bands of stylised petals, each with impressed
maker’s mark to base.
