          A CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER ARCHAISTIC ‘CICADA’ BOX   Compare this to a cinnabar lacquer box and cover which is similarly carved in
          AND COVER                                           high relief, in the collection of the Beijing Palace Museum, illustrated in The
          18TH CENTURY                                        Imperial Packing Art of the Qing Dynasty, Beijing, p. 169, pl. 73.
          The cover is carved in relief with a central fowerhead encircled by a band of
          detached kui-phoenix motifs, further surrounded by a band of lappets each
          enclosing a cicada. The sides of the box are carved with a band of expanded   清十八世紀  剔紅仿古蟬紋圓蓋盒
          taotie masks, all on a recessed brocade and leiwen ground. The interiors and
          base are lacquered black.
