           AN ARCHAISTIC BRONZE TRIPOD
           CENSER
           QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

           the compressed globular form supported on three mythical
           beast cabriole legs, rising to a slightly everted rim set to either
           side with a pair of curved handles cast as an elephant’s trunk,
           the midsection decorated with a band of archaistic kui dragons
           against a keyfret background, the base centred with a four-
           character apocryphal Xuande seal mark
           40 cm, 15¾ in.
           PROVENANCE
           Collection of Gustav Detring (1842-1913) and/or Constantin
           von Hanneken (1854-1925), and thence by descent.

                                                                      YUAN DYNASTY

                                                                      the flattened rounded sides rising from a stepped pedestal
                                                                      base to a long cylindrical neck, flanked by a pair of tubular
                                                                      handles at the rim, the body with six protruding flanges
                                                                      alternating with scalloped panels of animals in relief, the neck
                                                                      decorated with two applied sinous chilong, further decorated
                                                                      with archaistic designs at the rim, shoulders and foot, the base
                                                                      inscribed with a four character mark reading huzhou xue zao
                                                                      (made by Huzhou Xue)
                                                                      49 cm, 19¼ in.
